Military and Overseas Voting Bill Signed by Governor

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-- Secretary of State Beth Chapman, legislators and members of the military community joined Governor Robert Bentley for the signing of Senate Bill 55, the military and overseas voting bill, yesterday.

"I could not be happier that this bill is now law," said Chapman. "Our men and women serving overseas can now cast their ballot with the confidence that their vote will count."

Governor Bentley held the signing on Flag Day, a holiday set by the U.S. Congress to honor the ‘Stars and Stripes.’ "It is also significant that our bill was signed on Flag Day. Signing a bill into law that affects our military so greatly on a day that celebrates one of our nation’s greatest symbols could not have been a more fitting tribute."

Joining Secretary Chapman and Governor Bentley were Rear Adm. Clyde Marsh, USN (Ret.), Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs; Senator Bryan Taylor, who also holds the rank of major in the Alabama National Guard; Representative Ron Johnson; former Representative Jimmy Martin; and Brig. Gen. Sheryl Gordon, Col. James E. Porter and Major Safiya Ingram of the Alabama National Guard.
